I just had to share an incredible experience I've been having with my Grade 2 students – we've been diving headfirst into the fascinating world of maps! 🌍📚
I stumbled upon this amazing book, "Gabrielle Balkan illustrated by Alberto Lot," and let me tell you, it's a game-changer for these young minds. The way it unpacks the magic of maps is like nothing I've seen before. It's not just a regular read-aloud; it's more of an interactive journey that keeps the kids completely engaged.
This educational gem of a picture book starts with simple maps, like a kiddo's bedroom, and gradually introduces more complex concepts, including map keys, bus routes, roadways, and even weather patterns! We've been on a whirlwind tour of 12 different types of maps, from the tiniest room to vast cityscapes, highways, and even the stars twinkling above.
Each page does an incredible job of explaining what the map's all about, then encourages the kids to dive in, find hidden treasures, trace routes, and embark on all sorts of map-related adventures.
Now, here's the cherry on top: my young explorers got so inspired by this book that they decided to embark on map-making adventures of their own! They've mapped out their bedrooms, neighbourhoods, pets, classrooms and many more.
