Some books find a way to your heart and stay there. A Map for Falasteen by Maysa Odeh, illustrated by Aliaa Betawi, is one of those books—an unforgettable masterpiece that speaks directly to the soul. I was lucky enough to grab the last copy at the NCTE conference, signed by the author herself, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it.
This is one of the most important picture books of the year. It doesn’t shy away from the truth or sugarcoat reality for children. Through little Falasteen’s journey in school—where she confronts a world map that denies her homeland’s existence—the book gently but powerfully unveils the erasure of Palestine and the deep scars of colonialism. Yet, it is not a story of despair. It’s a story of resilience, pride, and love. As Falasteen’s mama reminds her, “Palestine lives in you and me.”
The gorgeous, evocative illustrations are a perfect companion to this heartfelt narrative, celebrating the beauty and history of a land that refuses to be forgotten. And the backmatter? A thoughtful and accessible resource for adults to help young readers understand more about Palestine’s past and present.
This book moved me deeply—its honesty, its humanity, and its insistence on hope. A Map for Falasteen is more than a book; it’s a reminder that the spirit of Palestine cannot and will not be erased. As the story so poignantly reminds us, from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. ❤️
