Between Words: A Friendship Tale by Saki Tanaka has become a cherished book in both my home and my classroom. As a parent, I see my kids gravitate toward Kai’s journey—his quiet struggle to belong, his love for building rock cairns, and his magical adventure that teaches him the power of connection. They see themselves in his courage and curiosity, and as we read together, I find myself reflecting on how often children face similar challenges of fitting in and finding their voice.

As a teacher, this story resonates on another level. Many of my students have faced language barriers, and I’ve seen firsthand how a smile, a shared laugh, or even a small gesture can build bridges where words fail. Kai’s wordless journey beautifully captures this truth, teaching children (and adults) that kindness and understanding are universal languages.

The illustrations are stunning—each page feels alive—and the wordless spreads are a masterclass in storytelling, perfectly conveying emotions that words could never fully express. This book is more than a story; it’s a reminder of the power of inclusion, empathy, and finding magic within ourselves before sharing it with the world. It’s a must-have for every parent and teacher who believes in the importance of connection, especially in a world that sometimes feels so divided.
