As an educator and parent, I am always looking for books that help children understand themselves and others more deeply. Bitsy Bat Team Star by Kaz Windness does this in such a powerful and thoughtful way.

Bitsy is a young bat who loves flying with all her heart. It defines who she is. When a new student named Enzo joins the class, Bitsy feels unsure. Enzo is a non-speaking owl who uses a tablet to communicate. He is kind and shares Bitsy’s love for flying, but that shared passion leaves her feeling unsure of her place.

This is a beautifully layered story that speaks to many children, especially those who are neurodivergent or have unique learning needs. It acknowledges how personal a special interest can be, and how complicated it is to share that space with someone new.

The story models empathy and inclusion without ever feeling forced. Enzo’s presence shows the importance of accessible communication, and Bitsy’s growth reminds us what it means to be a good friend. It is not about being the best, but about showing up for the people who matter.

This is a book I will be recommending widely. It is the kind of story that not only belongs in classrooms, but can help shape them into more understanding and inclusive places.
