As the school semester winds down, it’s a reflective time for many children, especially those in international schools. Graduation, changing grades, and forming new friendships are significant events in their young lives. Some of my students are even relocating to different countries or returning home, which makes this period even more poignant.
Thinking about these changes I recently introduced my class to the book “Built to Last” by Minh Lê. Illustrated by Dan Santat. This story beautifully captures the essence of friendship. The strength needed to face life’s twists and turns. During our discussion about the book we explored the nature of friendships. I emphasised that some friends will be companions while others may only be part of our lives, for a period. We also talked about how we meet people but realise quickly that we won’t form a bond with them. However I reminded my students that every encounter has its purpose.
In “Built to Last “ the story follows two friends who keep trying to create things but face repeated failures as their creations fall apart. Through these setbacks they come to realize that their enduring friendship is their accomplishment. This symbolic story is suitable, for audiences of all ages highlighting the idea that sometimes the repairs and effort invested in something can make it stronger and more enduring.
Upon finishing the book I shared a belief with my students; I shared a personal belief with my students: when we meet someone, it’s never by chance. Every encounter happens for a reason, whether to teach us a lesson or to support us during a particular moment in our livesI
The key message from “Built to Last” is that nurturing friendships requires dedication. It’s never too late to forge connections, rekindle ones and enrich our social circles for improved overall wellness.
I wholeheartedly endorse this book for those seeking to delve into themes of friendship and perseverance, with readers.
