A Refugee’s Journey Through a Child’s Eyes
Some books stay with you long after you turn the last page. This one? It lingers in your heart.
When my Grade 3 students began asking about recent events in the U.S., I wanted to help them understand not just the headlines, but the human stories behind them. This picture book does just that—through the eyes of a young girl born in a refugee camp after her Hmong parents fled Laos.
For eight years, she waits. She plays with her cousins, takes walks with her aunt, and wonders what life beyond the camp looks like. She watches families leave, wondering when it will be her turn. When it finally is, she must leave behind everything she has ever known—friends, routines, and the only world she understands—to start over in a new country.
This book is beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. It’s a powerful way to show children what it means to be a refugee, to wait for safety, and to hope for a new beginning. It made me teary-eyed, but more than that, it left me filled with love and admiration.
If you’re looking for a way to introduce young readers to refugee experiences with compassion and honesty, this is a must-read.
