I have a great interest in books that have deep layers of culture, immigration and friendship. This lovely lyrical story has specific details illustrated with clear images of the protagonist’s life and emotions. The raw authenticity of this gorgeous story will connect to any young reader. Teaching in an international school for more than a decade, I understand the pressure and isolation of parents and children adapting to a new culture and struggling with a new language while missing everything that once felt familiar and comforting. These emotions were told through Dane Liu’s frank, sincere text. The happy ending of the story was totally heart-warming – the character Dandan found a new friend, and with some adjustments, she is able to practice her Lunar New Year traditions. Don't miss out the back endpaper... It's a bonus especially with the instructions on paper cutting activities!
