One of my students was deep into a chapter book on hurricanes from the I Survived series, and that sparked a whole class discussion. Naturally, we turned to Jason Chin—and he’s done it again.

Hurricane is everything I hoped for: informative, accessible, and just visually stunning. My class absolutely loves his work (especially Watercress and Life After Whale) and this one led to so many questions, we ended up diving even deeper into how hurricanes form and why they’re becoming more intense.

From the clear diagrams to the gripping day-by-day storm tracking, it’s such a powerful nonfiction mentor text. Perfect for teaching structure and features of nonfiction, while also building understanding of the real-world impact of climate change.

This book made science feel alive for my students. That’s the magic of Chin’s work.
