As a teacher, I love books that create curiosity and this one did just that! “I Spot an Invention!” by Rana Aly and authored by Dinesh N. Melwani. This book lets young readers see the world through Sani and Jai’s eyes as they turn everyday moments into exciting discoveries. The story shows that “a single idea can come from anyone,” from Alarm Clock to Roti maker.
I recently shared this book with my “Comic Camp club” and it caused so many “aha moments” that the kids started spotting inventions around them, and inventing their own. It’s a perfect blend of storytelling and creativity!
One thing that makes this book classroom worthy is the clever back matter. The Activities for Educators and Caregivers section turns reading into doing — students can spot inventions, design their own or build prototypes with everyday materials. It is an area that enables the intersection of STEM and Literacy.
The inquiry based learning style and the PYP combine well with grades 1–3 of this book. It highlights the idea to kids that innovation begins with observing and that we are all creative.
Teachers wishing to inspire inventors, thinkers and makers in the classroom will find this useful.
