Just Like Millie

As the school year winds down, many students are preparing for big changes—moving to new countries or schools. This heartwarming and gentle book tells the story of a young girl and her mom who have just moved into a new home. The girl loves their new house, but she’s gripped by an overwhelming fear of being around other people. Her mom is wonderfully supportive, giving her the time she needs to process her fear and anxieties.

Parents often want their shy children to be confident, but it’s important to validate their feelings instead. This book beautifully illustrates that it’s okay for a child to feel their emotions, even the uncomfortable ones. Gently acknowledging their feelings helps them feel understood. Try saying, “It’s okay to feel worried,” or “It’s hard to try new things sometimes.”

I love this book because it highlights social-emotional learning (SEL) issues in quiet and clingy girls, who are often overlooked. While many books focus on children who are loud and overbearing, quiet girls rarely receive the structured support they need. This story shows how powerful a pet can be in helping kids with anxieties. A calm pet like Millie signals that the world is safe, offering unconscious reassurance and companionship. 🐶✨
