Some books stay with you long after you close their pages, wrapping around your heart like a warm embrace. A Gift of Eid by @shifasaltagisafadi Shifa is one of those books. From the very first page, I felt drawn into Yasmine’s world—her longing, her love, and her quiet determination to bring joy to her mother despite their shared grief.
Set in the bustling markets of Damascus, this story felt like stepping into a memory—one that is rich, textured, and deeply moving. Yasmine’s mother is grieving, and more than anything, Yasmine wants to bring her happiness. That desire to see a loved one smile again? I know that feeling all too well. When she makes the selfless choice to sell her own necklace to buy something special for her mother, I felt my heart tighten. The tenderness in this story made me tear up, reminding me of how love is often shown through sacrifice, not just words.
Shifa Saltagi Safadi’s writing is filled with heart, warmth, and authenticity. I had the privilege of meeting her at NCTE, and just like her stories, she radiates kindness and sincerity. Speaking with her and hearing her passion for storytelling made me appreciate her books even more. Reading her work feels like having a heartfelt conversation with a dear friend—gentle, meaningful, and unforgettable.
