I have a soft spot for books that begin with an “If you...” invitation, and this one gently welcomes readers into a world that many of us might overlook. What some people call weeds, this book reveals as a thriving ecosystem filled with life, wonder, and purpose.

The simple, lyrical text invites children to slow down, observe closely, and discover the many creatures that call a weedy garden home. From buzzing insects to fluttering birds and curious animals, each page celebrates the interconnectedness of nature. The collage illustrations are absolutely stunning. Bursting with colour and texture, they seem to spill off the page and encourage readers to linger a little longer.

What I particularly appreciated was how the book goes beyond the story. The back matter provides additional information about the plants and animals featured throughout the book, along with practical ideas about the importance of wildflowers and how to create spaces that support local wildlife. It is the kind of book that naturally sparks inquiry, wonder, and conversation.

Readers will come away inspired to look more closely at the wild places in their own neighbourhoods and perhaps rethink what it means for a garden to be “messy.” Sometimes the most beautiful things grow where we least expect them.
