We Celebrate the Light

As a teacher, the holidays are such a special time—both to recharge and to reflect. This year, I stumbled upon a gem of a book that feels like the perfect read to share with little learners during this festive season: We Celebrate the Light by Jane Yolen, Heidi E.Y. Stemple, and beautifully illustrated by Jieting Chen.

This nonfiction masterpiece shines a light (pun intended ) on seven winter holidays—Diwali, Solstice, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Bodhi Day, and Lunar New Year. In just a few lyrical stanzas, it manages to capture the heart of each celebration, weaving warmth, respect, and inclusivity into every page.

As a teacher, I’m always seeking books that not only educate but also inspire understanding. What I love most about this one is how it celebrates diversity while gracefully highlighting the common thread that connects us all: the light—both literal and metaphorical—that we cherish during winter, even in celebrations that often don’t get as much recognition.

The illustrations? Oh, they’re a dream, drawing you into the glow of each culture’s traditions.

This holiday season, while we enjoy our break, why not share stories that remind us of what makes our world beautifully diverse yet deeply connected? Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or simply a lover of beautiful books, We Celebrate the Light is a must-read.

Happy holidays, and may your season be filled with warmth, wonder, and light!
