Jasper Rabbit’s Creepy Tales! Unsettling Salad! by Aaron Reynolds, illustrated by Peter Brown creates that moment almost instantly.

In my classroom, Aaron Reynolds is a constant. His stories carry just enough suspense and humor to hold even the most distracted listeners.

This shift into a chapter book format feels thoughtful. It gives young readers the sense of stepping into something more grown up, while still being accessible. The story builds tension through a playful, slightly eerie tone, using anthropomorphic characters that children easily connect with. And Peter Brown’s illustrations add just enough darkness to keep readers curious.

But the story does not fully hold that tension.

After the pivotal salad moment, the narrative begins to lose its direction. The suspense softens when it could have sharpened. And yet, this book still works in a classroom.

It invites prediction. It sparks conversation. It creates that shared moment where children react together.
