My Lost Freedom

I picked up My Lost Freedom by George Takei thinking I knew enough about this part of history. I didn’t.

This book stopped me. It is written simply, but it carries so much weight. A child trying to understand why he and his family were taken from their home and placed in a camp, not because of anything they did, but because of who they were.

What struck me most was my own gap in knowledge. I didn’t know there were only ten camps. I didn’t know how families lived in them. I didn’t realise how this was allowed to happen.

That discomfort stayed with me. There is something powerful about hearing a story from someone who lived it. It doesn’t feel distant. It feels real and immediate. And that makes it harder to look away. This is one of those books that reminds me why stories matter. Not just for children, but for us as adults who still have so much to learn.

No regrets getting this book for my personal library shelf.
