How do you explain love to a child?

When I finished reading My Love for You Is Always to my Grade 3s, the room filled with a collective “awww.” That moment alone felt like a quiet review in itself.

This is such a heartwarming picture book about the love between a mother and child. Love is hard to define, and the mother in this story knows that too. Instead, she shows it through moments, feelings, and the everyday act of preparing a meal. The food, the smells, the warmth, the care. All of it becomes love.

I have been using this book as a mentor text for sensory imagery writing. From the endpapers that prepare you for smells, tastes, sights, and textures, to the child’s simple and curious questions, the language is rich yet beautifully accessible.

Inspired by this book, my students began writing digitally using Book Creator, exploring the question What is love? through their own words and images. They drew on their senses, personal experiences, and small everyday moments to describe what love feels like to them. Watching their ideas take shape digitally reminded me how powerful the right mentor text can be. It does not just spark discussion. It invites children to create.
