"What do you notice?"

Writer's picture: Shameer BismillaShameer Bismilla

A simple question “What do you notice?” allows young writers to see how sentences are being used to create meaning. The children are learning to notice author’s patterns and responded enthusiastically to the invitation to try it out. The Grade 2s had fun playing and studying how authors used conventions in their writings.

Conversations like:

1. Why is there a full stop next on Mr. Shameer? 2. Why capital letter on the word Aunt Alice 3. What do capital letters do when we read it aloud

These conversations will build a bridge between reading and writing. They learned that meaning is made when reading and writing meet (Jeff Anderson).

The sentence strips seen above are available here. You can download a copy of the worksheet here.
