I love "I Am Brown" by Ashok Banker. This joyful book will be another addition to my collection of identity mentor texts for use in preschool and lower elementary grades. Sara Ahmed's book, "Being the Change" has great insight on making 'I am' statements. Students in my class could relate to such statements in "I Am Brown" and penned their own identities. This led to animated discussion on self-bias and we concluded the lesson by placing ourselves in the world through self-identification and self-reflection such as 'I am love', 'I am beautiful', 'I am kind'...
